Disinfection

To ensure compliance with State and Local Environmental Laws, be sure to check the chlorine level in the chlorinator regularly. 

​

  • State requirements:

    • Aerobics with surface application must be disinfected using chlorine tablets or bleach 

    • Chlorine kills harmful bacteria and pathogens before effluent is dispersed to lawn

    • Chlorine should be kept in system at all times

    • Only use chlorine designed specifically for aerobic septic systems

If you have a tablet chlorinator, use ONLY Septic tablets and store in a dry and well-ventilated place, away from metals.​

​

SWIMMING POOL TABLETS CANNOT BE USED IN YOUR AEROBIC TREATMENT UNIT. The chlorine in pool tablets is made from trichlorisocyanuric acid (Tri-Chlor), which are made to be kept under water- and can release an explosive gas (nitrogen chloride) when they are not totally immersed in water during use-such as in your septic tank.

Most systems use about one gallon of liquid bleach per month. Concentrated and gel bleach formulas may not work well with some chlorinators. Ask your technician what works best with your brand system.

How to Apply and Maintain Chlorine Tablets:
Adding Tablets:

  • Safety – Wear disposable gloves, eye protection and do not inhale chlorine gases

  • Locate chlorinator, (pvc pipe with a screw on cap located outside pump tank riser lid)

  • Remove cap and pull out tablet holder tube that is inside

  • Place bottom of tube on solid surface and add 4 chlorine tablets

  • Slowly ease tube back down into holder. (Dropping tube can result in system damage)

Maintaining Chlorine:

  • Check tablets in one month; if tablets have dissolved add 4 more an check in 3 weeks 

  • Tablets dissolve depending on the amount of water usage; each home will vary slightly

  • After a few of months you will know how long 4 tablets last and when to check system

  • When checking if all tablets have not dissolved; just add enough to get back to 4 tablets

  • Over filling with tablets will result in tablets swelling, sticking in the tube and ruining

  • If tablets clog tube remove them, wash out tube and start over with 4 new tablets

  • Managing the tablet application correctly results in proper disinfection and cost savings


Bleach Chlorination:
What is bleach chlorinator and how does it work?

  • Reservoir that holds household bleach (Clorox)

  • Line is connected from reservoir to sprinkler pump 

  • When pump is activated bleach is siphoned into pump tank 

  • Bleach chlorination systems can be installed on any aerobic septic

What is the advantage of bleach chlorination?

  • Bleach cost less than chlorine tablets

  • Ease of use; just remove cap and fill reservoir once per month
